Tips About Cruise Travel EtiquetteBy Darren Takenaga 1. Dress Appropriately. This is one of the major faux pas among first time cruisers. Certain attire is expected aboard ship at certain times. For example, most cruise ships have resort casual dress during the day and have a formal or informal dress code in the evening. This is one of the traditions that many cruise goers look forward to. It is considered bad manners to show up at a formal dinner night in jeans or shorts. Look at your itinerary, and you will see what attire is expected. 2. Always Tip The Service Staff. Most workers on a cruise ship do not make much as a base salary. They rely on tips for the bulk of their income. You will receive much better service and be more well liked by other passengers if you tip well. This includes those cleaning your room as well as table staff and others. Another word of advice along this line is to arrive promptly for dinner, especially if you have assigned seating. It creates delays for the wait staff and your table mates when you are tardy. 3. Control Your Children. If you are on a family vacation, a cruise is a wonderful place. Many cruise lines offer great things for kids and teens to do. Remember, however, that they are your children, and you are responsible for their behavior. Do not overlook your childs unruliness at the expense of other travelers. Children should be allowed to have fun, but they should also be respectful of others while they are at it. 4. Be As Quiet As Possible In Your Cabin. There are hundreds of cabins on a cruise ship, all located in extremely close proximity. Be courteous of your neighbors and do not turn your radio or TV up loudly, particularly at night when others may be sleeping. It is also a pet peeve of pretty much all cruise goers when people slam their cabin door when entering and exiting. Please use common sense and be considerate of others in this area. 5. Be Patient. Because there are so many passengers on cruise ships, there is almost invariably going to be a time when you will have to wait in line. Especially when going ashore in port. Do not complain to the people around you about the wait. There is really nothing anyone can do about it, so simply be patient and wait your turn. The crew will have you on your way quicker than you think. Try starting a pleasant conversation with someone in line with you. It will pass the time quicker than either of you realize. Following the rules and using good manners is essential to having a pleasant cruising experience. Make the effort to familiarize yourself with the rules before you leave for your cruise and you will find yourself much more relaxed and better prepared to enjoy yourself. Use common sense and be courteous to others and you will have a fabulous time on your cruise!
